Trump pulls US out of WHO; UN braces for a funding shortfall and a tougher stance on global agencies


On Trump’s first day, he announced that the US would withdraw from the WHO, significantly affecting the UN. As WHO’s top funder, the US contributed $1.2bn in 2022-2023. The UN refrained from criticising Trump but noted that the funding gap would increase pressure on other donors. Elise Stefanik, Trump’s UN ambassador nominee suggested withholding UN funding as a potential action. Analysts believe the UN is more prepared for Trump but acknowledge that the current geopolitical climate is more unstable than in 2017.
